Natsume Yuujinchou

Just finished watching Natsume Yuujinchou and Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou (2nd season). I was pretty reluctant to give it a shot when I saw it was labeled "Shoujo". Since I pride myself on "trying, before hating", I was willing to give at least the first couple of episodes a shot. As I mentioned though, I ended up watching the whole series. So it couldn't have been too bad right?

The premise is actually pretty interesting. Natsume is a lonely kid (boohoo) who has been sent to several houses. Well the story starts after that (thank god). He accidentally breaks out a super-awesome youkai, who most of the time hides his form as a cat. Nyanko-Sensei makes a pact to protect Natsume till the day he dies in return for the Book of Friends. The Book of Friends is a notepad left by his grandmother. Any demon with his name written inside is under his utter control. Being the softy, he is though, he decides to release them all upon request.

Regardless of the slow pace of the show, its light-hearted atmosphere made watching rather pleasant.

Pros:
  • Easy to follow
  • Relaxing settings
  • Lovable characters
  • Good Scene Variety
  • Nyakno-Sensei in all his forms
  • Likable Supporting Characters
Cons:
  • Natsume is a huge pushover and never does more then his signature plain right-hook.
  • The Pace is sometimes too slow
  • Taunts you with possibilities
  • Supporting Characters don't play a larger role till Zoku
Granted the show has its share of flaws, but I enjoyed it plenty and can't wait till a third season

Final Verdict:
Natsume Yuujinchou:
B-
Zoku Nastume Yuujinchou: A
